Message from the Superintendent of Schools

Dear Students, Parents, Community and Staff,

It is with great excitement that I welcome you and your family to Hazel Crest School District 1521/2. It is an honor and privilege to serve as the Superintendent for such an awesome district and amazing community. I have had the opportunity to meet many community members, parents and students and I am overjoyed with the level of support and involvement. I am very eager to begin this awesome work of leading the innovative and engaging programs that will support increasing student achievement in the 2019-2020 school year. I believe my nine years of experience as a Superintendent will benefit this community in making gains.

As we embark upon the new school year, we have a new opportunity to create life-long memories for our students. I ask that you assist in this journey by ensuring your student(s) are in attendance every day and on time. This work of preparing your child for their future is very important and I do not take this position lightly. Attendance is very important and I would like for us to achieve an attendance rate of 98% daily.

Academic Achievement & Growth. Through our collaborative work we can and will increase the academic achievement for our students. We are proud to offer robust opportunities for our students at all grade levels, including STEM courses at both schools. We pride ourselves in working tirelessly to meet the individualized needs of all of our students with the goal of preparing them for high school and beyond. We offer full day pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms with door-to-door busing for the safety of our children. In addition, we offer free breakfast, lunch and dinner for our students during our academic day.

Community Engagement. I am also continuing to explore opportunities to engage our community. Developing community relationships and making connections is vital to the success of our District. Whether or not you have a child attending our schools, we encourage you to take full advantage of the many activities showcasing our students and their tremendous talents. One of the highlights I am excited to share is the Listening Tours. This is an opportunity for the community and parents to share their thoughts and ideas.

Please follow us on Twitter @Crest_5, or Facebook and stay tuned to our website, www.sd1525.org to learn more about our upcoming Community Walk and other opportunities to share in our success.  Please welcome us in the community as I lead the Hazel Crest School District 1521/2 on our 1st Annual Community Walk, Saturday, September 21st.

In closing, I look forward to a successful school year ensuring the overall growth of all students here in Hazel Crest School District 1521/2. Please join us at our Annual Back-to-School Bash on Friday, August 23rd from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the District Office located at 1910 West 170th Street.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kenneth Spells
